What is a City Champion Volunteer?

This is an exciting time for Colorado College. We have embarked on an ambitious campaign to achieve the college's Vision 2010 goals, including our mission to provide the finest liberal arts education in the country.

CC City Champion volunteers constitute a network of talented and energetic representatives reaching well beyond campus boundaries who play an integral role in helping the college strengthen and sustain its Vision 2010 goals. In addition to hosting social gatherings for alumni, parents, and students, CC City Champions help increase the visibility of the college in their area, serve as connectors to their communities by assisting the college with student recruitment, identifying internship and career opportunities, annual giving and Funding the Vision.

City Champions Work to Broaden Support Base

The campaign to Achieve Our Vision 2010 will require the active and sustained engagement of all members of the Colorado College community — faculty, staff, students, alumni, parents, and friends — today and over the next three years.

The college’s City Champions program is a far-reaching, highly coordinated effort aimed at building and nurturing a CC community that is palpable, real, and dynamic on campus and in cities throughout the United States and around the world.

“When I travel, I am struck by the level of enthusiasm among the CC community and its desire to stay connected,” says CC President Dick Celeste. “The City Champions program is a vigorously engaged expression of that community.”

City Champions is a network of talented and energetic volunteers who reach well beyond campus to play an integral role in helping the college meet its Vision 2010 goals. These volunteers represent the college’s campaign field organization — the activity “below tree line” on the way to peak performance. These dedicated people are working together to create an ongoing, sustainable, and engaged campaign effort nationally and internationally.

City Champions operations have begun in strategic parts of the country where there are large numbers of alumni, parents, and prospective students. Key cities include Boston, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. A CC alumna/us or parent has already signed on as a City Champions coordinator in each of these cities, and programming is well underway. Every member of the extensive CC community is encouraged to become a champion and launch a City Champions effort in his or her own city.

In addition to hosting social gatherings for alumni, parents, faculty and students, city champs help increase the visibility of the college in their areas; serve as connectors to their communities by assisting the college with student recruitment, identifying internship and career opportunities; and help with annual giving and development efforts.

“The City Champions philosophy acknowledges a very simple fact: Supporting CC is a whole fabric and not a single thread. For instance, a development volunteer this year might prefer to be an admission interviewer next year ... and vice versa,” says Jay Maloney ’75, assistant vice president for development. “Giving money is one of the ways — but not the only way — that people can contribute to CC.”

On-campus city champions from a wide range of offices, including admission, alumni and parent relations, Career Center, athletics, media relations, annual giving, and development, meet monthly to plan and coordinate joint efforts. A “base camp” is being created to facilitate constant coordination and communication between on-campus champs and champs in cities across the country.

The extent to which we achieve our vision will depend in large measure on the success of the City Champions program, and on you.

Admission

Overall admit rate was 26% this year, which is the lowest it has been.

Interviews by alumni in City Champion Cities
2006-2007

366 total interviews were conducted in the 10 City Champion cities as well as Portland, ME; Portland, OR; New Mexico; Arizona; Woodstock, VT; Oklahoma; North Carolina; Tennessee; St. Louis, MO and international locations. Of the students who interviewed with alumni, 322 applied, 148 were admitted for fall and 15 were admitted for winter.

2005-2006: 180 interviews
Boston - 42 interviews, 38 incoming students
Chicago - 31 interviews, 24 incoming students
Colorado Springs - 40 interviews, 41 incoming students
Denver - 1 interview, 73 incoming students
Los Angeles - 10 interviews, 13 incoming students
Minneapolis/St. Paul - 14 interviews, 20 incoming students
New York - 1 interview, 28 incoming students
San Francisco - 26 interviews, 20 incoming students
Washington, DC - 6 interview, 34 incoming students

Class of 2011 Information:

• 4,850 applicants for class of 2011, a record number
• 32 percent admitted; 49 percent men and 51 percent women
• Included among this year’s entering class of 525 students are 17 high school valedictorians, three black belts in martial arts, the Swiss Junior Olympic Men’s Nordic Teleskiing champion, and an international boomerang competitor. Forty-four are in the top 1 percent of their graduating classes.
• 46 percent of first-year students are receiving some type of aid
• 18 percent of class has self-identified as American ethnic minority
• 24 students or 5 percent are international

2006-2007: Overall, at least 78 organizations (69 of them from City Champion cities) offered nearly 80 specific internship opportunities. In City Champion cities, 46 more internship opportunities were offered.

Internships. We would be glad to assist you in designing an internship opportunity specifically for your company or publicizing an existing internship program offered by your organization. Most Colorado College students would be interested in full-time and part-time summer internships; however, some students may also be able to participate in internships during the academic year. Students pursue internships that will help them test out a career field or give them substantive experience in an area of interest.

Post a job opportunity. If your company or organization has full-time entry-level jobs available, we would be glad to make the opportunity available for Colorado College students and recent alumni through SUCCESS, our on-line posting system. Investors in CC have contributed $150 million over the past five years. Additionally, alumni and parents are considering investment opportunities valued at more than $40 million. The Goal: A $300 million campaign to raise $80 million to undergird FACULTY, $100 million to support STUDENTS, and $120 million to develop a CAMPUS for the next generation.
