College Ahead!

What is it?
College Ahead! is designed to introduce students from the American Southwest to higher education in the liberal arts by providing a stimulating and supportive introduction to academic, co-curricular, and social life at Colorado College.

Our goal is to provide high school students entering their junior year with a preview to a college experience that will help them reach their potential. Students will be working on reading, analyzing, writing, and speaking in the context of a pre-college course. Students will be engaged intellectually with each other on the topic of their chosen course. During their time on campus, students will meet with representatives of the admission office, financial aid office, career center, and student learning center to learn more about the college experience. In addition, students will take field trips to areas of interest in the Pikes Peak region. The College Ahead! Program runs from June 15 - June 28.

Colorado College
Colorado College is a highly selective liberal arts and sciences college. Our mission is to challenge students, one course at a time, to develop the habits of intellect and imagination that will prepare them for learning and leadership throughout their lives.

We are looking for students who are interested in learning more about the liberal arts and sciences and engaging with other students through a challenging course experience. We also want students who would benefit from learning more about college opportunities by interacting with college professors and spending time on our campus. Applicants must be from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, or Texas. Applicants must be entering their junior year in high school in the 2008-2009 school year.

Costs
This program is free of charge to accepted students, thanks to a generous grant from the Robert and Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust and additional support from Colorado College. Stipends for travel and spending money are also provided. Students will live on campus in designated residence halls with counselors and mentors. The value of this package is in excess of $2,000, and includes the pre-college course and two weeks of room and board, in addition to the stipends mentioned above.

Participate in one of two courses taught by Colorado College Professors
Course I: Science as a Way of Knowing: An Inquiry Approach
This course i designed to inspire the study of science and will examine a variety of phenomena and relationships in the natural world. Students will work together to construct views of the world and improve their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. Through the scientific method, we will ask questions relating to: how scientists collect and analyze DNA for DNA fingerprinting; how much solar energy the earth collects each day; and how many baby flammulated owls occupy a nesting cavity.
Taught by Professor Ralph Bertrand
Ralph Bertrand teaches genetics and molecular biology in the biology department at Colorado College. He is interested in ancient human migration patterns in Southeast Asia. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside.

Course II: Globalization and Its Discontents
This course examines the slippery term "globalization," praised on the one hand by promoters of free trade and open markets, denounced on the other hand as nothing but domination by the elites of international capital over the moneyless of the whole world. The courses addresses both views to reflect the effects of globalization on national borders, on national sovereignty, on the movement of capital and industries, on migration, and on culture.
Taught by Professor Alberto Hernandez-Lemus
Alberto Hernandez-Lemus teaches in the philosophy department at Colorado College. He is interested in aesthetics, Latin American philosophy, and social and political economy. He received his Ph.D. from the New School, New York City.
