Getting Started

Because selecting the right off-campus study program for you requires time and planning, we encourage you to stop by the Office of Off-Campus Study (Worner 232) early in your academic career. There you pick up materials about different program options, speak with the Coordinator of Off-Campus Study, obtain the names of students who have recently returned from a particular program, or read evaluations from student alumni of various programs. Also, please partcipate in our group advising sessions.

Before you meet with the Coordinator of Off-Campus Study, we strongly encourage you to think about the following questions. Note down issues and questions that arise from your reflection and/or discussion with friends and parents.

Step 1:

  1. Think about your goals and objectives. Why do you want to study off-campus? What do you hope to gain from the experience?   How will the experience abroad complement your studies at CC?
  2. Where would you like to study? Do you have a specific region, country or city in mind?
  3. How long do you intend to study off-campus? (a block, summer, semester, or year?)
  4. Are you interested in learning a new language or improving your proficiency in an existing language? How would you assess your language skills?
  5. Are there any requirements you will need to fulfill while off-campus (major? minor? thesis?)
  6. What is your preferred learning style? (do you learn best by seeing? hearing? experiencing?) Are you someone who does better with a lot of structure and guidance, or do you prefer a more independent learning environment?
  7. What aspects of an off-campus study program are most important to you? (location? availability of certain classes? program length?)
  8. What special needs, unique to you, do you need to consider in choosing a location and program?
  9. Timing: when are you least constrained by major academic requirements, sports, or family events?

Step 2:

Read about the different types of programs available to you.

Step 3:

Look at program descriptions.

Step 4:

Attend a general information or group advising session to learn more about your options and Colorado College policies related to study abroad. Anyone at any stage of the planning process is invited to attend. The earlier you start, the better!

Step 5:

Meet with your academic advisor to discuss which programs might work well for your educational plan at CC. Each program also has a dedicated faculty advisor that can help with academic questions, and it is recommended you speak with them.

Step 6:

Meet with the Coordinator of Off-Campus Study if you have additional questions. Call or stop by our office to set up an appointment.

Step 7:

Decide on your program and apply.
